Light Pollution Ruins The Sky

By:

For those sky-watchers who worry about the environment, having the world go green is not enough. The preferred color is a dark green. Although light pollution doesn't generally cause as much alarm as other issues such as the changing climate, there is an outspoken community of stargazers that feel this is an important problem that must be worked on and eventually solved.

Light pollution is a growing concern, detracting from the vastness and beauty of the numerous stars and constellations of the Milky Way. Only one-third of the cities in the United States are dark enough at night for people to see the Milky Way while standing in their backyards.

The Milky way is used by many to gauge the level of visibility in a dark night sky. Poring over a map of the United States, you'll discover a few large areas that still have skies unsullied by light pollution. It is difficult to find locations to observe the dark in the West.

Security lighting is not only necessary at night, since the majority of property crimes are happening during the daylight hours. (in home and industrial settings) may not be as important as people think. Twenty-seven states have responded to the need for controlling light pollution, but more need to become concerned with this problem.

The pollution that is caused by home owners will need to be reduced. The first step is to reduce security lighting. The second step is to place window coverings precisely in place. Lessening security lighting is as important as being able to properly put in window coverings.
